The Trenton Neighborhood Initiative

Investing in Our Home

For more than 125 years, Trenton, NJ, has been a home to Capital Health. And as the leading hospital network in and around the city, we recognize that our responsibility to its communities extends far beyond the walls of our emergency rooms and medical offices.

That’s why, in 2021, we launched the Trenton Neighborhood Initiative: a five-year, $10-million effort that seeks to make a meaningful impact on our local neighborhoods in the area. Working hand –in hand with residents and key stakeholders in the region, this initiative is built to promote lasting change in our Trenton communities and better support the broader health and well-being of the people who live there.

About TNI

In addition to our foundational investment of $1 million, we’ve launched an ambitious campaign seeking philanthropic support from valued corporate partners, friends, and neighbors to help meet our TNI commitment of $10 million.

With the funds collected, as well as the time and resources that are continuously donated to the cause, the Trenton Neighborhood Initiative will work to meet the needs of individuals and families across the area, with a focus on supporting Trenton residents as they LIVE, WORK, GROW, AND CONNECT.

Here’s exactly what each of those strategic program pillars work to accomplish:

LIVE: Assist with homeownership, neighborhood redevelopment, and housing policy

  • Homebuyer Assistance Program: Financial assistance to help people buy homes in Trenton
  • Home Improvement Program: Financial assistance for homeowners and landlords in the TNI area to make home improvements
  • Implement strategies to identify and eliminate lead and other home health hazards
  • Implement strategies to improve the housing system and return vacant properties to active use

WORK: Provide resources for job training, education, and small business support

  • Financial support and training for new and existing businesses in the TNI area
  • Vocational training and scholarships for Trenton residents interested in healthcare careers
  • Pipeline to employment at Capital Health for Trenton residents

GROW: Improve child and family well-being

  • Care management for residents of the TNI area to meet a broad range of household needs
  • Strategies to increase child lead screenings
  • Strategies to address trauma and nurture resilience among children and families

CONNECT: Increase access to the internet and computers

  • Subsidized internet access for residents of the TNI area to provide necessary links to educational and economic opportunities
  • Free devices and coaching on using new technology
